Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 6:00 PM CSTJoin us for our spring donation-based Learn to Skate lessons taught by Brownbody instructors and assistants. No experience required. Brownbody's goal with these lessons is to offer a learn to skate experience for youth and adults from Black and Brown communities that centers blackness in the curriculum, format, and structure of the lessons.
All lessons take place at the newly built Tria Rink conveniently located downtown Saint Paul. Everybody is welcome, pay what makes you happy! Nobody turned away due to lack of funds.
Brownbody lessons are Tuesdays from 6 - 8pm. Youth (pre-school through 12 years of age) arrive at 5:30pm on the first day of lessons and 5:45pm on every other date for orientation. Teens and Adults arrive at 6:30pm on the first day of lessons and 6:45pm on every other date for orientation. Each 60-minute lesson will rotate between group instruction and practice time.

Parking ramps: entrance at 21 East 6th Street or 428 Wabasha Street North (discounts available)
A parent or guardian must remain present for youth 12 and younger.
Levels:
Groups are formed on the ice by age & skating level. You and/or your child will be assigned an appropriate group on the first day of lessons depending on skill level.
Figure skates are recommended for the beginner skater since they lace up completely around the ankle and provide more support. However, these lessons can accomodate skaters with all types of skates. Complimentary rental skates are available at the rink by request. If you have your own skates, please bring them as wearing your own skates is BEST!
Helmets:
Helmets are required for all skaters and are available to borrow for free by request.
Dress:
Knee and elbow pads are recommended but not required. Please dress in layers so you and/or your child can remove them as necessary. All skaters must wear gloves. If you do not have gloves and/or warm clothing please notify us (info@brownbody.org) in advance so that we may furnish these items for you.
Lessons:
Please note, the lessons are cumulative. Mastery of the skills taught comes with consistent practice and time on the ice. Albeit, you are permitted to drop in for lessons, your ability to attend lessons consistently will better support your growth and mastery of the skills taught. Furthermore, some lessons are cumulative—what is taught in a particular week may build off of what was covered the previous week. If possible, please plan on attending as many consistent lessons as possible.
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to classes starting. Classes will start promptly at the scheduled time. Please note, due to safety concerns, if you are more than 10 minutes late, you may not be permitted into your lesson.
Open skating will be permitted in a special, coned off area of the rink for the duration of session. This area is intended for students to practice their skills before and/or following their lessons.
Please complete one registration per participating skater.
Donations:
These lessons are donation-based thanks to a grant from the Knight Foundation. Donations can be made at the ice arena at the time of your lesson. Nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds. Suggested donations are scalable between $5 and $15 per skater per lesson. Pay what brings you joy and fulfillment :)
