Eight Extras 101 - Architect of Change - Practicum

Did you know that the Channels of Acupuncture and Eight Extraordinary Vessels can regulate psycho-emotional states, and can be used to treat addictions? Interested in learning more?

Join us November 15 to 17th, 2019 and explore TCM psycho-emotional aspects of channel theory, the Eight Extraordinary Vessels, and how life change occurs, with Dr. Yvonne Farrell!

In this 2-3 day seminar, dive deep into the nature and pathology of the channels of acupuncture like never before, including psycho-emotional aspects of each system, enhance your learning through cases, techniques and practicum with Dr. Farrell.

Day 1 – Friday November 15, 1pm – 6pm:  The Eight Extraordinary Vessels 101

This course provides an overview of the channel system with a focus on the 8 Extraordinary Vessels. We will explore the pathways of each of the 8 extras and how those pathways inform the functions and clinical applications for each vessel.  Participants will learn how the 8 extras are different from the primary channels and how they have a profoundly deep impact on the vital substances, extraordinary fu and 7 orifices. We will discuss how these vessels can be used to treat diseases or imbalances that are affecting yuan qi.  Participants will learn how to create 8 extra treatments with confidence.

 Day 2 – Saturday November 16, 9am – 6pm and Sunday November 17, 9am - 1pm:  The Architect of Change.

Patients suffering from chronic physical and emotional conditions often have many habituated patterns of being and entrenched beliefs that make change challenging. In this course, we will explore how change occurs and what we might do to support our patients in their capacity to initiate and sustain change.  A healthy relationship between yuan qi and ying qi is an essential ingredient in the process of change. We will cover the 8 Extraordinary Vessels (8EV) and their impact on transformation and transportation (T & T) from a constitutional perspective (yuan qi). We will also discuss the post-natal function of the Spleen and Stomach as agents of change through diet, lifestyle and interaction in relationships (ying qi).  In the Pi Wei Lun, Li Dong Yuan says that “once the Spleen & Stomach are damaged, the five turmoils will arise. Damaged by heat, the original qi loses its function and, as a result, the limbs are cumbersome and fatigued. “ (Flaws 2004) In this state, change is almost impossible.

*Pre-requisite: Eight Extraordinary Vessels 101.

Day 3 – Sunday November 17, 9am – 6pm:  The Architect of Change case studies, and afternoon practicum.

The morning continues from Day 2 with cases studies. In the afternoon, Dr. Farrell will supervise as you practice on fellow students to diagnose and treat several patients using Channel Theory and the Eight Extra Vessels. Discussions will take place about the differences between treating a patient with the 8 extras and other approaches. Students will practice Eight Extras diagnosis and treatment, and have an opportunity to ask questions about point selection, technique and potential outcomes and prognosis.

*Pre-requisite: Eight Extraordinary Vessels 101.
