Welcome!

We are very pleased to bring you an exciting 2019 season of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society, featuring a new series of enriching continuing education programs for mental health professionals and two stimulating public lectures which are open to all, including our Season Opening Event. This year our public lectures are Co-Sponsored by Smart Love Family Services through a rewarding, ever growing collaboration between our two organizations. We are proud to introduce a new Co-Sponsor, the Women's Issues Section of the Illinois Psychological Association, partnering with us on one of our professional development programs this year. We are also offering a thought-provoking presentation on navigating ethical dilemmas in the therapeutic relationship, which will meet the licensure requirements of social workers, psychologists, and professional counselors. And finally, we are launching an entirely new membership program that grants attendance and CEs for all of our programs throughout the year, at no additional cost, and at a substantial saving over non-member single program fees. Our low membership rates cover all program fees, including our Season Opening Event, and students and early career professionals enjoy further discounts.

 Season Opening Event

Co-Sponsored by

In Honor of William J. Pieper, M.D.

"When Our Choices Are Not Really Our Own:

How Hidden Motives for Unhappiness Keep Us from Creating         the Life We Truly Want, and What Can Be Done"

Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D.

Saturday April 13, 2019, 3-5 pm, Registration opens at 2:30 pm; 2 CEs

Complimentary for Members; General Admission: $30.00; Reduced Fees for Early Career Clinicians and Students

Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper will present a new understanding of what goes wrong when choices are unfree, namely that an unrecognized addiction to unhappiness lies behind many of the large and small decisions individuals experience as freely chosen. She will suggest ways in which parents, therapists, teachers, and individuals can enhance their ability to help others as well as themselves develop the capacity to make good choices that are not in the service of hidden agendas. Dr. Pieper will frame her understanding in the broader context of selected philosophical and psychological views of freedom of choice while illuminating some limitations of these views.

Presenter: Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph.D., is an author and psychotherapist who works with children and parents, and serves as a consultant to agencies and other mental health professionals. She authored two best-selling, award winning children's books, Mommy, Daddy, I Had a Bad Dream! and Jilly's Terrible Temper Tantrums: And How She Outgrew Them. And she co-authored with the late William J. Pieper, M.D., the best-selling parenting book, Smart Love: The Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Regulating, and Enjoying Your Child; the popular adult self-help book, Addicted to Unhappiness: Free Yourself from Moods and Behaviors that Undermine Relationships, Work, and the Life You Want; and Intrapsychic Humanism: An Introduction to a Comprehensive Psychology and Philosophy of Mind.

Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper's work is the foundation for the non-profit agency, Smart Love Family Services, which provides a broad spectrum of counseling and educational services to children and families. Her work is also the foundation of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society, a non-profit dedicated to education and research on the comprehensive psychology, Intrapsychic Humanism, and the psychotherapy approach based on that psychology, Inner Humanism. Dr. Heineman Pieper also authored numerous articles and presentations, many of which can be found on her website, MarthaHeinemanPieperPhD.com. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Radcliffe College, Martha Heineman Pieper earned her doctorate at the University of Chicago.

In Honor of William J. Pieper, M.D. (1929-2014): Dr. Pieper had a certificate in child and adult psychoanalysis, served on the child therapy faculty of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, and had been a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical School. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Illinois.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how the ability to make choices free of hidden agendas is our birthright and how this ability develops and can be nurtured.
  2. Describe the reason many people make choices that are unfree, namely that these choices are driven by unrecognized motives for unhappiness and how those develop.
  3. Utilize this new understanding of free and unfree choice as it affects clients to improve participants' work (as well as inform practice in other areas, such as parenting, self-help, and teaching).
