What's Going On
in Materials Research
at Alfred University?

Join us Tuesday, March 12th, from 4:00 - 6:30 for a stimulating overview of materials research from just down the road at Alfred U.

New York Photonics, the Rochester Optical Society, Rochester Precision Optics, Laser Focus World and Vertex Optics welcome you to a knowledge upgrade and a networking opportunity. Following one hour of presentations, join our presenters and your colleagues for a wine and beer reception with hors d'oeuvres.

Our presenters are all faculty from the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University

Transparent Materials for Optical and Photonics Applications
Dr. Yiquan Wu, Professor of Ceramic Engineering
Polycrystalline transparent ceramics are emerging as a highly promising alternative to single-crystal materials for potential utilization in a wide range of optics and photonics applications, most notably being ceramic lasers and scintillators. To produce high quality transparent optical ceramics for practical applications, it is essential to study the fundamental science involved in the processing of the materials. An overview of the research works on transparent materials at Yiquan Wu’ group at Alfred University is presented in this talk.

Engineering Glass Compositions and Structures for Optical Properties
Alexis Clare, Ph.D., Professor Glass Science
Dr. Clare has over 35 years’ experience in engineering glass compositions and structures to modify their behaviors for industrial applications, with an emphasis on optical behaviors.  She will speak to her work which has focused on measuring glass structures for a range of material compositions, to measuring properties of glass and glasses used in telecommunications applications.

Integrated Infrared-Terahertz Photonics and Additive Manufacturing
S.K. Sudaram, Ph.D.
Inamori Professor of Materials Science and Engineering
Chair, Mechanical and Renewable Energy Engineering Programs
An overview of research photonic capabilities covering infrared (IR) to terahertz (THz) frequencies at Alfred University will be presented. Selected results on chalcogenide glasses and ceramic dielectrics for photonic applications will be highlighted. With recent installation of LITHOZ system for 3D printing of ceramics, we are poised to apply this capability for R&D of photonic materials and devices.

Networking, new ideas, food, entrepreneurs, your colleagues, a bar...all this for just $25 which includes two drinks, a selection of appetizers, and easy parking at the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

We will also have the 2019 New York Photonics Map/Calendars on hand!
