Join us on a walking tour of parts of the historic Philadelphia Navy Yard followed by lunch at the Urban Outfitters Cafeteria. FitC member RIck Linder will be our guide. As a young Naval Officer, Rick was stationed at the Navy Yard in the 1960's. In addition to the buildings, he will share his knowledge about the ships and how a naval yard works.
The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard is the oldest naval shipyard in the country. It dates to 1776 when the Continental Congress leased land for the fledgling Navy. The Shipyard was moved to its current location about the time of the Civil War.
In 1995, most of the Navy Yard was closed and the area has since become a thriving business campus. There are now more than 143 companies located there and in January, 2014, the first hotel opened.
The Navy Yard is an exciting part of our city and it is just a bus or subway ride away from Center City.
Event Cost: $11 per person - (includes $10 donation to MANNA). Refunds available until April 18th, 2019.
We will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Guard House and the walk will be a stroll of about three-miles. Lunch at 11:45 pm at Urban Outfitters Cafeteria. Heavy rain cancels.
