Overview:  This workshop provides the participant with an overview of all the necessary basic legal aspects of Small Business Human Resources, including what you need to know before hiring employees and how to comply with applicable rules and regulations. Ensuring your employees are compliant with Federal and State workplace requirements is important for any organization, regardless of size. Since many small businesses can not justify hiring a staff of HR professionals but must still deal with complex and matters relating to employees, this workshop is an ideal overview of these critical aspects of your business.

The topics covered include:

  • How to prepare for your first employee: setting up payroll; registering with EDD; the elements of workers compensation; how to analyze additional employment costs.
  • How to interview and hire your first employee: What you can ask; providing compliant application forms; related new hire paperwork.
  • Discussion of wage and hour regulations - this is one of the biggest areas of potential liability for employers.  Topics covered will include:
    • exempt/non-exempt classifications
    • overtime
    • timely payment of wages
    • meal and rest breaks
    • alternative workweeks
    • and more...
  • Discussion of how to manage employees; establishing and maintaining policies for employee feedback, the importance of counseling and documentation.
  • Discussion of termination procedures, including timing of final payments and necessary paperwork.
  • An overview of recent state legislation affecting small businesses, including sick time requirements, harassment training, and leaves of absence.
TThis workshop will be presented by Jan Grimes, an HR consultant who has worked with small businesses on HR complianced for more than 36 years.

Jan Grimes started her consulting practice in 1987. Serving as an “on call” Human Resources Manager, Jan brings 36 years of experience to her clients. Working with organizations that cannot justify hiring a staff of human resources professionals and yet must deal with complex and costly matters relating to employees, she provides a full-range of human resource-related services. Her services include: writing, reviewing and updating Employee Handbooks; consulting on individual employee issues; conducting Personnel Audits, developing internal policies and procedures, creating Performance Review systems, establishing an HR Department, conducting a Needs Analysis to identify and address employee issues affecting the workplace, management training including Harassment Prevention, managing an HR Department on a part-time consulting basis and recruiting staff.
