Trauma-Informed Care and Trauma-Sensitive Interventions
Day after day, many of us work with children, families and staff who have experienced trauma, yet we often do not know how to respond to their needs. As a result, more nonprofits and agencies are expanding their work to become “trauma-informed and resilient organizations” which is defined as “The program, organization and system:
- Realizes the widespread impact of trauma & understands the paths for recovery;
- Recognizes the signs & symptoms of trauma in children, families & staff;
- Responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures & practices; and,
- Seeks to actively resist re-traumatization.”
In this training we will unpack each of these concepts and explore what this really means for initiatives, organizations and agencies serving our communities. We will examine how the culture of an organization can care for and support staff while also creating safe, supportive environments for families and children through trauma-informed policies and practices.
Participants will walk away with tools for assessing and integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures and practices, and a deeper understanding of how trauma-informed care leads to more sustainable, resilient organizations. Participants will also explore specific trauma-sensitive interventions they can use with individuals and families to promote safety, build resilience, and minimize the impact of trauma. We encourage you to bring a team from your programs, as there will be time for program planning and reflection.

About the presenter:
Jessica joined the DCAC team in 2014 with more than 10 years of experience working with children, teens, and families. She spent six years in urban schools, first as an ESL teacher in East Harlem, then as a bilingual therapist at a school-based health clinic in Manhattan, and finally as a K-8 school counselor in Northeast Denver. Jessica holds master's degrees in education and social work. She is also a registered yoga teacher for children and adults, and she regularly incorporates mindfulness, breath-work, and movement in her therapy with clients.
