MALA 2019 Spring Workshop:
Diversity in Children's
Literature and Programming

Join MALA and the Lawrence Public Library in exploring the various ways libraries have become more purposeful and inclusive with diversity in youth services.

Jamie Campbell Naidoo, president of the Association for Library Service to Children will lead the morning workshop entitled Welcoming Library Spaces Where All Means All: Inclusive & Targeted Programs, Collections, & Outreach for Diverse Families. This session explores how to plan programs and outreach activities using authentic print and digital materials that affirm and celebrate accurate depictions of everyday lives and experiences of culturally diverse children, teens, and their families. It also highlights practical ways for librarians to provide welcoming spaces and safe havens for children and their families from all cultural backgrounds.

After lunch join in two mirrored breakout sessions at 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Topic 1: Exploring Worlds Inside and Outside Our Communities through Picture Books
with Morgan Daigneault & Matthew Harper

The practice and benefits of using picture books in the classroom to expose children to people, places, and ideas beyond their own lives and neighborhoods.

Topic 2: Exploring Windows and Mirrors with Diverse Booktalks
with Kim Patton

“A mirror is a story that reflects your own culture and helps you build your identity. A window is a resource that offers you a view into someone else’s experience. It is critical to understand that students cannot truly learn about themselves unless they learn about others as well.” (Emily Style, National Seed Project.)

Topic 3: Diverse Programming Lightning Round
with Kansas & Missouri area librarians
Learn about the great events your colleagues are doing in their libraries to promote diversity through all kinds of programming.

Lunch and snacks by Wheatfields. Please include any dietary needs in a note when you register.

Parking: At the Vermont Street Parking Garage adjacent to the library. The top level is 10-hour free parking. Level 3 is 10-hour pass or $1.00 per day. Levels 1 and 2 are two-hour free parking.
