Research Pilot and Spaceflight Operations Engineer
Remotely Piloted / Unmanned Aircraft:A Pilot’s Perspective on Flying Drones
Mark Pestana, Colonel, USAF (ret), is a consulting research pilot and systems engineer. He flew aeronautics research and Earth science missions from NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, Edwards AFB, CA. He is adjunct faculty in the aviation safety program at the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering. He previously served NASA as a flight crew operations engineer in the Astronaut Office, Johnson Space Center, TX, developing crew operations for the International Space Station. In the USAF, Mark served in NORAD and the DOD Space Shuttle Program as a space operations officer. A rated Command Pilot, he’s flown over 5000 hours in over 30 aircraft types, and logged 213 combat intelligence missions. Decorations include the Air Medal (9), Distinguished Service Medal (3), Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal, and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. He is also an award-winning aerospace artist. Eleven of his paintings are in the USAF Pentagon collection.
