Science Day Out: Exploring Wetlands
A Field Trip to Dickson Mounds Museum & Emiquon Preserve

Science Day Out Wetlands Many people see Illinois as miles and miles of corn and soybean fields. Over time, glaciers, flowing rivers, raging floods, expansive prairies, and humans have all made their mark on the land. Explore our state’s natural and human history at the Emiquon Preserve and Dickson Mounds Museum in a fun day of hands-on science.

On this free trip, students entering grades 7-9 will travel to Dickson Mounds Museum and Emiquon Preserve for a day filled with authentic science opportunities. Participants will

  • Travel with the former Dickson Mounds Director, Dr. Michael Wiant as he explains the landscape passing the bus windows;
  • Conduct shoreline investigations of water quality and invertebrates with scientists at the Emiquon Preserve, the largest wetland restoration project outside of the Florida Everglades; and
  • Learn how American Indian cultures lived and used the river at the Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds.

Check-in will begin at 7:30 am at the Illinois State Museum--Springfield. The bus will depart promptly at 8:00 am and will return to the State Museum at 5:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. Advanced registration is required and space is limited. To register, click the button below.
