Keynote Speaker

Dr. Walter Gilliam

Dr. Gilliam stated "bias isn't just a police problem, it's a preschool problem." Dr. Gilliam will bring his ground-breaking research on expulsion and suspension in early learning settings to the conference on June 13.  Implicit biases are just that — subtle, often subconscious stereotypes that guide our expectations and interactions with people.

"We all have them," Gilliam says. "Implicit biases are a natural process by which we take information, and we judge people on the basis of generalizations regarding that information. We all do it."  If implicit bias can play a role on our preschool reading rugs and in our classrooms' cozy corners, it no doubt haunts every corner of our society.  Biases are natural, as Gilliam says, but they must also be reckoned with. Come and learn much, much more from Dr. Walter Gilliam.

In the meantime, read more about implicit biases here https://www.npr.org/sections/education/

The Substantial Cost of Early Learning Inequity Affects Us All
The high rate of suspension and expulsion in early education is directly linked to high rates of academic failure, drop outs, and incarcerations. It directly affects the future workforce, and to be more specific, it severely hinders a diverse workforce and our economic future. Businesses that cultivate a diverse workforce reap the benefits of increased productivity and creativity and gain the reputation of an employer that hires talented people without regard to race, ethnicity or gender. Understanding the advantages of workforce diversity helps establish an organization with a competitive edge.
