HFFA School Lunch Workshop

Join Headwaters Food and Farming Alliance (HFFA) for a dynamic and interactive evening of food and fun as we explore food tools to help you and your family make packing school lunches more enjoyable and sustainable.

This exploratory evening involves a series of stations that parents (with or without their children) rotate through to gain knowledge and tips from local dietitians, chefs and farmers. Each rotation will last approximately 20 minutes. The evening will start with a brief opening and end with a closing address.

Toolbox Stations:

(1) What is a healthy lunch?  - Join Nicole Hambleton, Registered Dietitian, to explore Good-Better-Best choices for school lunches, meet Canada's new Food Guide, and view our joint venture video with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health.

(2) How to talk to your kids about food - Join Jacalyn Dryland, Registered Dietitian, at this talking and listening station where we will explore issues such as "picky" eaters, the concepts of stomach, mouth or heart hunger, and the benefits of having children pack their own lunches.

(3) Make and Take - Join farmer and cook Rebecca Landman at this station where we will get our hands dirty and make a simple, scrumptious snack that will be a great addition to your child's lunchbox repertoire.

(4) Tasting Corner - Join chef and community member extraordinaire Phil DeWar to explore topics such as unique foods, cultural foods, local and seasonal eating.

There will also be a Community Round Table for parents wishing to take a break and chat with fellow community members about food issues, and a Quiet Kids Corner for kids to relax, colour and read (supervision will be provided by intermediate students with their babysitting certificate).

Please help us plan and purchase the right quantities of supplies by registering by May 6th.

Pre-registration BONUS...

The first 25 families registered will be entered to win a reusable lunch kit!

Draw to take place at the event.  Must be present to claim prize.

This event is made possible with funding from the Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grant from the Ministry of Education. It is a joint effort between the school councils of Hyland Heights and Primrose Elementary Schools, with coordination and promotion provided by Headwaters Food and Farming Alliance.
