Omar Gandhi, leading Canadian architect, to lecture at Keene State College

Canadian architect Omar Gandhi and his design studio, Omar Gandhi Architect, have garnered much national and international attention in the last eight years. Gandhi most recently served as the Louis I. Kahn visiting Assistant Professor in Architectural Design at the Yale School of Architecture for the fall semester of the 2018-19 academic year.

Join us at Keene State College when three generations of design practitioners come together to share design perspectives.

Professionals will visit with students at their desks, discussing their projects and providing valuable feedback.  Students will gain an understanding of real world measures for evaluating their ideas and have time to network.

Projects from the annual AIANH High School Design Competition will also be on display and high school students, their instructors and parents are invited to join us during the Open Studios and Reception, as well as for the lecture from Omar Gandhi.

Lecture: Omar Gandhi, "Defining a process"

An honest recollection of the first days of private practice and the defining of both a design process and a way of working in the profession. Beginning with the first three from 2010-2012 on the south shore of Nova Scotia as a one-person studio. Applying the strategy of “Adaptation” as a means of telling unique narratives of places and people through local and historical building forms, materials and methods. Beginning with a simple local typology, the forms are then extruded, bent or flattened. Roof planes folded and pleated. Details are sculpted by conditions and use, and then the reconstituted adaptation is receptive and responsive in keeping with a modest, formal lineage. This approach is based firmly in a formal methodology, the materials and forms of which both express and respond to the specific qualities of the site. Through our pursuit to unify people and context, and our mindfulness towards precedents and our client relationships, we have seen the successful completion of a growing body of built work.

Omar Gandhi is the recipient of the 2014 Canada Council for the Arts Professional Prix de Rome and was listed in Wallpaper* Magazine’s 2014 Architects Directory – their list of the top 20 Young Architects in the World. Omar was named one of the Architectural League of New York’s ‘Emerging Voices’ of 2016, one of Monocle Magazine’s 20 most influential Canadians and was named one of Architectural Record Magazine’s Design Vanguard for 2018. Most recently the studio was the recipient of the 2018 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture for the cabin at Rabbit Snare Gorge (pictured at the top of this page) – Canada’s highest honour for built projects.
