Issues in Children's Mental Health Series Conference

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACEs)  shows a clear link between the occurrence of traumatic events in childhood and negative health outcomes throughout the lifespan. Child abuse, intimate partner abuse and sexual assault do not only cause distress while they are going on, they can have a significant impact on a person’s development, affecting them cognitively, emotionally, socially as well as physically; disrupting brain development and leading to a lifetime of increased risk. Everything from clinical depression and addictions to cancer can have roots in trauma. A more trauma-informed model helps us see disease and maladaptive behaviors as a result of how toxic social environments affect us on emotional and even physical levels. We will challenge professionals to expand their view of illness and health and think about how changes in the social environment are just as necessary for healing and prevention as traditional medical interventions and therapy are.

Foundational Understanding of Trauma and Its Effects:

We will explore the neurobiology of trauma and how childhood abuse and traumatic experiences in childhood and adulthood affect psychological, emotional and physical health. Special attention will be paid to the link between trauma and depression and addiction.

Trauma-Informed Practice:

We will discuss how to use a trauma-informed model for therapeutic interventions with both children and adults. Moving beyond a rigid talk-therapy model, we will speak about how an approach using creative arts, play therapy, group work and trauma-informed individual work can create a path to healing.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the biological, social and psychological effects of trauma
  • Better screen for histories of trauma
  • Incorporate a more trauma-informed approach to your work
  • Create better interventions and outcomes for survivors of trauma
Continental Breakfast and lunch will be served.

Certificate of Completeion will be awarded at the end of the workshop.
