ASCE MN May Section Meeting

Bloomington Ski Jump

ASCE MN invites you to the May Section meeting at the Bloomington Ski Jump.

The Bloomington Ski Jump has been in operation for over 100 years and has produced over a dozen Olympians. The sport and the venue have changed with the times. The sport has evolved from a “watch this” challenge between daredevil skiers to a highly scientific sport on precisely engineered ski jumps. Advancements in equipment have also added to the transformation of ski jumping from the “agony of defeat” into one of the safest winter sports.

Jack Broz and Steve Olson will lead us on a walking tour, which will highlight the new smaller jumps with summer ski jumping on an engineered summer surface. A “walk to the top” of the 70-meter jump will provide some perspective of ski jumping and a view of 32 water towers! (the engineering perspective never ends).

The tour will begin at 4:00pm.  We will meet in the chalet built with volunteer labor from the club. The presentation will cover sport and site engineering and various processes used to deliver projects. Topics will range from Public-Private-Partnerships, Design-Build, Lidar surveying and structural engineering to how Mayo Clinic is engaged with athlete development.

Parking and Directions:  The chalet is off of East Bush Lake Road, immediately west of Chalet Road.  Limited parking is available at the chalet.  Additional parking is available at the parking lot along Chalet Road, south of East Bush Lake Road.  There is a sidewalk from the additional parking area to the chalet.

Dress for the Weather:  Make sure to dress for the weather conditions and a walking tour.  Parts of the tour will include walking on grass, up hills, and potentially muddy terrain.

Social Hour:  Meet up after the tour for Social Hour and Networking with ASCE members at Poor Richards.

4:00-5:00 pm: Walking Tour
5:00-7:00 pm: Social at Poor Richards (8301 Normandale Blvd, Bloomington)
