This course is an overview of dental, oral and maxillofacial trauma. Early recognition and management options to create an optimum patient care pathway in the “Golden Hour” is discussed. Both adult and paediatric trauma management is outlined. Appropriate imaging for the trauma patients using cases will be presented.

Common orofacial injuries and theoretical aspects of management and surgical options will be covered. There will be a hands-on session on plating, splinting and case scenarios with radiology interpretation and management options. The opportunity to experience the hardware used for open reduction and fixation and splinting for dento-alveolar injuries as well as discussion on relevant imaging and interesting cases.



To understand the basic principles of trauma management

To recognise types of dento-alveolar injuries and their management

To recognise different facial fractures and understand the management principles

To discuss the rationale, materials and methods for open reduction of facial fractures

To understand the options available for restoring the mouth following trauma



By the end of this course, delegates should:

Be able to outline the early management of trauma patients

Have an understanding of the principles of trauma management

Be able to outline common adult and paediatric trauma cases

Understand types of dento-alveolar injuries and their management

Be able to recognise common signs and symptoms of facial fracture presentation

Understand diagnostic tools and appropriate imaging for differentiating various fractures

Know the theory underpinning treatment of facial fractures

Have exposure to the hardware used in treating fractures with open reduction

Practice splinting teeth on models
