Course Description:

Periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases that are infections must be considered systemic diseases. This includes gingivitis, periodontitis, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The 2017 Classification System takes this into consideration and is designed to assist periodontal health providers in conveying an understanding of the various periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions to the public, physicians, general dentists, dental hygienists, and to dental specialists.

Course Goals and Learning Objectives:

To explain the 2017 classification system of periodontal and peri-implant diseases

To gain an understanding through a thorough periodontal examination that periodontal diseases affect the systemic health of the patients and that systemic diseases affect the intensity of periodontal diseases.

To help the participants of the course to understand how best to communicate periodontal and peri-implant conditions to their patients and to the above mentioned groups in a straightforward and understandable manner.

Paul Levi, DMD

Dr. Levi is the Director of the American Board of Periodontology and former President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. He has been in private practice for more than 44 years in Burlington Vermont and lectures both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Levi holds teaching appointments in various national and international universities including University of Vermont School of Dental Hygiene, Tufts University, Harvard University, Universidad Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona, University of Khon Kaen Thailand, etc.

He has received multiple clinical and scientific awards including the clinician of the year for several consecutive years. Dr. Levi has also authored multiple scientific articles, chapters of books and is the author of "The Non-Surgical Management of Periodontal Diseases: A Handbook".
