Understanding and Responding to Trauma

July 11, 2019

8:30 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.

Chris A. Sweigart, Ph.D., OVEC ECS Consultant

OVEC - 100 Alpine Dr. Shelbyville, KY 40065

One in four students has been exposed to trauma and may experience symptoms that can have a significant impact on their lives in the short- and long-term.  Some populations of students, such as those with disabilities, may be more vulnerable, including a higher risk of traumatic exposure and symptoms. Students with traumatic exposure may need additional consideration and support to be successful in school.  Further, with the passage of recent legislation, schools must create trauma-informed teams to address these students’ needs. This training is designed to help individuals and teams to:

  • Understand the requirements of new legislation

  • Apply the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s framework to their own school contexts

  • Learn the role of school-based trauma-informed teams

  • Describe the effects of traumatic exposure on students

  • Identify students who have had been exposed to trauma

  • Implement appropriate and effective methods of responding to students with trauma symptoms

  • Develop and implement goals to help others become more trauma-informed

  • Collaborate with community partners to assist students with traumatic exposure

  • Recognize, respond to, and minimize secondary traumatic stress in staff
