ASCE/SEI 7-16 WIND LOADS: CHANGES AFFECTING THE DESIGN PROFESSION

Don Scott and Cherylyn Henry will cover the ASCE 7-16 Wind Provisions and specifically the changes and additions to the previous editions of the standard.  These changes include the new wind speed maps, roof pressure coefficients, and other additions such as provisions for rooftop solar, elevation factor and expanded tornado commentary. The focus of the presentation will be on how these changes affect the design profession.  These provisions have been adopted into the 2018 IBC and are currently being adopted by many states and local jurisdictions throughout the country. 

Donald Scott, P.E, S.E, F.SEI, F.ASCE

Mr. Scott has been a member of the ASCE 7 Wind Load Subcommittee since 1996, shaping wind load provisions for the United States, and currently serves as Subcommittee Chairman. He is a member of the ASCE 7 General Provisions Subcommittee, ASCE 7 Steering Committee, ASCE 7 Main Committee, and ASCE Codes and Standards Activities Division Executive Committee. Mr. Scott is also Past-President of the Board of Directors for the Applied Technology Council (ATC) and has served on their board since 2009. He has authored many technical publications and presented numerous seminars and National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) webinars on wind design throughout the country.  Currently, Donald R. Scott is a Senior Principal at PCS Structural Solutions, Tacoma, WA. With PCS Structural Solutions since 1982, Don has led many of the firm's educational, commercial, and healthcare projects, such as Lake Washington High School and MultiCare Milgard Pavilion. Mr. Scott studied engineering at the University of Idaho where he received his B.S and M.S degrees. 

Cherylyn Henry, P.E, F.SEI, M.ASCE

Ms. Henry is a registered professional engineer with nearly 15 years of design experience in buildings and bridges. Her work has encompassed long-span bridges and building structures for government clients. She has been a member of the SEI/ASCE 7 Wind Load Subcommittee since 2012, serving as secretary for the ’16 cycle and as vice chair for the ’22 cycle, and is a member of the ASCE 7 Main Committee. She was also actively involved in the SEI Young Professionals Committee, serving as secretary from 2011 to 2013, and as chair from 2013 to 2015. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Studies and a Master of Architecture in the Structures Option from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University.
