Finance 101 for Startups
 

 

This course helps small business owners understand accounting and finance. The course explains the entire accounting process including how transactions get posted. You will also learn how to read and analyze a set of financial statements. The course also helps you evaluate long term investments using important economic criteria. Techniques for analyzing the cost of products and services will also be covered. The purpose of the course is to give business owners a solid grounding in finance so they can properly manage their business by looking at the numbers. The course includes hands on exercises to help ensure you understand financial management. NOTE: Please make sure to bring a calculator with you when attending this course.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how accounting transactions are posted
  • Distinguish accrual accounting from cash basis accounting
  • Know how to setup a Chart of Accounts for your business
  • Identify the five major groups of accounts that comprise the accounting model
  • Understand the structure of three financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Statement of Cash Flows
  • Know how to read and analyze financial statements with ratios, horizontal and vertical analysis
  • Know how to benchmark your financials for better insights into your performance
  • Understand the process for evaluating long term investments

 

Instructor


Matt H. Evans is a mentor with SCORE and holds three professional certifications: Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Certified in Financial Management. Mr. Evans has worked as a Controller, Analyst and Accountant in all sectors of the economy (private, public and non-profit). He has over 30 years of experience in the field of financial management including evaluating major investments, budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling. His educational background includes Six Sigma Green Belt, Corporate Finance at the Wharton Business School and Cost Management at J. L. Kellogg School of Management.
