Lockport & Joliet Summer Day Trip
Join us for a unique summer day trip as we explore places significant in the cultural heritage of our state of Illinois. In 1850, the Norton Building was built on the banks of the I&M Canal in Lockport to process grain. Today it is home to the ISM—Lockport Gallery. Curator John Lustig will provide an overview of the building’s architectural components and the current exhibit Rocked and Rolled, which presents art celebrating the last 50 years of music paired with spectacular specimens from the Museum’s geology collection. We will also see the canal, said to have been the source of Chicago’s growth.
The Illinois State Penitentiary in Joliet opened in 1858 and it was in use until 2002. This unique facility is remembered for many reasons including its fascinating architecture, significant inmates, and the many film and television references including “The Blues Brothers” filmed in 1980. Recently, some parts of the prison were opened for tours that recount the history of this notorious place.

- Illinois State Museum-Lockport Gallery Special Exhibit: Rocked and Rolled: Moon Rocks, Meteorites, & Rock Stars
- Illinois & Michigan Canal
- Old Joliet Prison: 1.5 hour guided tour
- Drive-by other historic sites

Participants must be at least 15 years of age.

- Non-Members: $149
- $75 per person deposit due by Monday, July 8
