Orvis Portland Trout School



Want to become a proficient trout angler? Orvis Portland is offering a Trout School where you will learn how to become a more effective and successful trout fly fisher. The class will consist of two portions, where you meet at Orvis Portland on June 13th from 6pm-7:30, and there is an "on the water" portion where you will meet on the Clackamas River on June 15th from 8am-12pm.

The first 1 ½ hours of the class will be spent at Orvis Portland covering:

  • EQUIPMENT
  • KNOTS
  • RIGGING
  • BASIC ENTOMOLOGY
  • FLIES/FLY SELECTION

The second portion of the class will be held on the Clackamas River. For the "on the water" portion of the class you will learn where trout live in streams, and why they live there (food, safety, spawning habitat, etc.). You will be wading/hiking around; so, this class is not intended for anyone who has issues with mobility. You must be physically able to get around on your own in order to participate in this class.

In the "on the water" portion of the class you will learn:

  • READING WATER
  • OBSERVING (INSECTS, FISH ACTIVITY, BIRDS, WATER)
  • MATCHING THE HATCH (FROM OBSERVATION)
  • CASTING/PRESENTING YOUR FLIES EFFECTIVELY
  • TECHNIQUES (DRY FLY, NYMPHING, WET FLY SWING, STREAMERS, DRY/DROPPER)
  • WADING/NAVIGATING WATER SAFELY

The class is limited to 4 anglers, below is a list of what you will need for the workshop:

  • Basic/Intermediate skills are required for this class (casting/wading/basic knots/etc.)

  • Your own rod/reel/line outfit for trout (4-6 wt single hand rod/reel/line outfit) – If you don’t have gear we offer a 20% discount on an outfit of your choice by registering and taking this class.
  • Wading gear (waders or wet wading gear/studded wading shoes/raincoat (if needed)/optional wading staff)
  • Polarized sunglasses/hat/camera
  • Valid ODFW angling license
  • Flies/leader/tippet (we will email a list of what to get once you are registered)

Cost is $150 per person (non-refundable). Cancellations will be accepted until 7 days prior for the scheduled date, otherwise you will forfeit the reservation for your spot.
