Affirmative therapy with transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and otherwise gender-diverse clients will be the focus of this seminar. A foundational understanding of the difference between sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation will be presented. Discussion will include developing an affirming therapeutic perspective; mental health risks and protective factors for transgender people; special issues in working with transgender and gender nonconforming youth; supporting families through gender transition; and supporting clients in accessing gender-affirming medical treatment.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Define and cultivate an affirming stance toward people of diverse gender identities
  • Differentiate between sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
  • Identify mental health risks and protective factors for transgender people
  • Support parents and families as they navigate gender exploration and transition
