2019 WORKSHOP - Research Challenge Bootcamp

The first half of the Research Challenge Bootcamp will cover the 2019-2020 ISEF pre-college rules, forms, deadlines, competition dates, etc.

The second half will be hands-on and active with participants learning what good protocol paperwork looks like, understanding how to do a thorough review & provide constructive feedback to students and working in small groups to review provided case study protocols.  Toward the end of the workshop, we will be introducing our fair management system and assisting participants to create their own logins/passwords for the upcoming year!!

The workshop will also have a section in which we will cover alignment of research/engineering projects with the CCSS and NM STEM-Ready Science Standards (or NGSS).  A number of standards and practices can be beautifully addressed/met via inquiry-based projects that can also be leveraged to compete for scholarships/awards in events like Research Challenge/Science Fair, Junior Science & Humanities Symposium, JAS Paper Competition, Regeneron Science Talent Search, Broadcom MASTERS, and more!  We will have two currently practicing teacher leaders presenting this section of the training (Jennifer Nilvo & Creighton Edington).

This workshop includes training for schools that wish to field their own Scientific Review Committee (SRC)/Institutional Review Board (IRB) in order to be able to review student research protocols (human, microorganisms, hazardous "stuff") for approval PRIOR to the start of data collection as required in the Intel ISEF Rules for Pre-College Research.

CENTRAL NM REGION:

  • Attendance at the Research Challenge Bootcamp is MANDATORY for at least ONE committee member from each school wishing to field their own Scientific Review Committee (SRC)/Institutional Review Board (IRB)!
  • It is MANDATORY for at least ONE person from each Central NM region school/homeschool/group planning to send students to the Regional Research Challenge to complete the on-site Bootcamp workshop OR the on-line Bootcamp course (must score 80% or higher on post-test).
