2019 WORKSHOP - Research Challenge Bootcamp

The first half of the Research Challenge Bootcamp will cover the 2019-2020 ISEF pre-college rules, forms, deadlines, competition dates, etc.

The second half will be hands-on and active with participants learning what good protocol paperwork looks like, understanding how to do a thorough review & provide constructive feedback to students and working in small groups to review provided case study protocols.  Toward the end of the workshop, we will be introducing our fair management system and assisting participants to create their own logins/passwords for the upcoming year!!

We will also spend a little time talking about the alignment of the CCSS & NM STEM-Ready Science Standards (NGSS) with inquiry-based student research/engineering design projects.  Well aligned projects can not only help students master a number of standards & practices, but also afford them opportunities to showcase their work, compete for scholarships & awards, and truly demonstrate their knowledge along with the ability to apply it.

This workshop includes training for schools that wish to field their own Scientific Review Committee (SRC)/Institutional Review Board (IRB) in order to be able to review student research protocols (human, microorganisms, hazardous "stuff") for approval PRIOR to the start of data collection as required in the Intel ISEF Rules for Pre-College Research.

CENTRAL NM REGION:

  • Attendance at the Research Challenge Bootcamp is MANDATORY for at least ONE committee member from each school wishing to field their own Scientific Review Committee (SRC)/Institutional Review Board (IRB)!
  • It is MANDATORY for at least ONE person from each Central NM region school/homeschool/group planning to send students to the Regional Research Challenge to complete the on-site Bootcamp workshop OR the on-line Bootcamp course (must score 80% or higher on post-test).

**STUDENT RESEARCHERS (grades 8-12) ARE WELCOME TO REGISTER FOR THIS WORKSHOP IF SEATS ARE AVAILABLE. TEACHERS, LOCAL COMPETITION COORDINATORS & SRC/IRB MEMBERS WILL BE GIVEN PRIORITY IN REGISTRATION.**

Please note that this is a FULL DAY workshop!  We will begin promptly at 9:00am, so please plan to arrive between 8:30-8:50am to get signed in, grab some coffee & breakfast, etc.

The workshop is being facilitated by Karen Kinsman and Erin Garcia from the UNM STEM-H Center.  We will have a couple of guest presenters in the standards section (Jennifer Nilvo & Creighton Edington)!

Coffee, bottled water, & light snacks will be provided.

LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED!  We will take a 30 minute break and then continue with the workshop promptly (...eating while learning is perfectly OK!). Let us know if you have dietary issues/restrictions (other than vegetarian as that will be taken care of).

You must attend the FULL DAY in order to receive a Certificate of Completion for the 7.5 hours of professional development.

If you are attending to certify your local SRC/IRB Committee, you must complete the ENTIRE 7.5 hours of training in order for your committee to be certified by the Regional Research Challenge SRC/IRB Co-Chairs to operate in the 2019-2020 school year.
