LOCATION: Start at Glencoe Paddle Access and hike through historic Glencoe
TIME: Meet at 9 am on Saturday, September 7
HIKE DESCRIPTION: The hike begins at Glencoe Paddle Access on the MST and heads toward Glencoe Village. We'll walk alongside a quiet road as we pass through this quaint restored mill town. When we exit the town, the trail turns to a flat, gravel double-track path for a short while before entering the woods onto the Highlands Trail. The Highlands Trail is a rolling, single-track, natural surface trail which will take us to Great Bend Park. At Great Bend we begin our return trip via the MST. We'll take an out-and-back jaunt on a spur trail called the Island Trail where there will be excellent views of the Glencoe Mill Dam and get close-up views of the Haw River - maybe even spot a blue heron, osprey or bald eagle! Once finished hiking the Island Trail, we'll continue on the MST past Glencoe Village back to Glencoe Paddle Access. Plan on a quarter of the hike being on a paved surface and the rest on natural surface (roots, rocks, leave, etc). The majority of the hike is fairly flat, but there are some rolling sections and one long climb, but it's not steep. All ages are welcome on this hike - minors must be accompanied by an adult. This hike is being hosted by Burlington Recreation & Parks.
