College Ready Readers & Writers: Using the Workshop Model in High School English Classrooms

As high school English teachers, how do we consistently meet the needs of students across a broad range of proficiency and provide quality instruction aligned with standards. How do we afford students ample opportunities to read and write for authentic purposes and audiences, and to make choices regarding topics and texts? How do we structure available time to ensure students are actively reading and writing in the volume that promotes the greatest growth?

In this session, participants will explore how reading and writing workshop can provide effective answers to these questions, and examine the applications and implications of reading workshop, writing workshop, and a combined reading/writing workshop approach in high school English classrooms.

Objectives

  • Explore the benefits of the reading and/or writing workshop at the high school level
  • Understand the primary components of an effective literacy workshop:
  1. Mini-lesson
  2. Student engagement and choice
  3. Conferring
  4. Small group instruction
  5. Opportunities for social learning
  • Discuss concerns, constraints, and actionable next steps toward implementing the workshop approach in high school English courses
