Transitioning into a Supervisory Role

Being promoted into a supervisory role brings several challenges and opportunities.  Supervisors have two major roles within the organization. They must successfully manage people and oversee processes. Your hard work and skill set has led you to this new role. Your opportunity to be successful increases as you gain a better understanding of what needs to be done when you accept this responsibility.

Supervising people requires that you handle existing relationships with individuals that were previously your friends. You will now have to put friendships aside while building trust and gaining credibility with your new team, your new peers, and your manager. You must set clear expectations and provide feedback to your team.

Supervising processes requires an understanding of the technical aspects of your position and department.  You are now responsible for your own work and for the results of your department.
