Complex Adaptations to Psychological Trauma: Practical Approaches

Presented by: Dr. Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD

This interactive workshop will describe complex adaptations to psychological trauma in a variety of populations. Trauma-informed treatment approaches will be discussed, and practical approaches to deal with difficult clinical situations will be illustrated through role plays. Finally, how to recognize and overcome vicarious traumatization will be described in the workshop.

By the conclusion of this workshop, learners will be able to:

State current knowledge regarding science of PTSD on the developing child (impact of trauma on the mind and body);
Explain the effects of trauma on mind and body;
List symptoms and treatment challenges when working with populations with PTSD (including dissociative subtype);
Plan strategies for working with young people who have PTSD;
Discuss issues related to Vicarious Trauma for caregivers, including prevention, strategies, and organizational factors.

About Dr. Ruth Lanius

Dr. Ruth Lanius is Professor of Psychiatry and the director of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) research unit at the University of Western Ontario. She established the Traumatic Stress Service and the Traumatic Stress Service Workplace Program, both services that specialize in the treatment and research of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and related comorbid disorders. Ruth currently holds the Harris-Woodman Chair in Mind-Body Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. Her research interests focus on studying the neurobiology of PTSD and treatment outcome research examining various pharmacological and psychotherapeutic methods. Ruth has authored more than 150 published papers and chapters in the field of traumatic stress and is currently funded by several federal funding agencies. She regularly lectures on the topic of PTSD nationally and internationally.
