Ethics and Mandated Reporting 

Overview:

Mandated Reporting is required by all health practitioners, police officers, educators and human service workers in Maryland.  As practioners, this can cause ethical dilemmas between mandated reporting and confidentiality.  The training will review current reporting requirements for Mandated Reporters in Maryland while addressing the ethical conflicts that may arise.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the moral and ethical responsibility to report any incidencts that could be considered abuse or neglect of children or vulnerable adults.
  • Know the Statutes and Regulations regarding reporting requirements.
  • Understand when to report, where to report and what information is necessary to make a report.
  • Establish a process for internal review and when to seek supervision on ethical dilemmas.

About the Presenter:

Meredith Miller, MSW, LMSW is with Student and Family Services for Wicomico County Public Schools as the Mental Health Coordinator.  Miller also serves as an adjunct faculty for the Salisbury University School of Social Work.  Miller was formerly the Coordinator of the Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center.

Mark Shaffer, PhD, LCSW-C is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Salisbury University, bringing a long practice history in social work and more broadly in human services working with children, adolescents, yound adults and families in both inpatient and outpatient mental health settings.
