SMART Recovery

This full day event will cover two courses in the SMART Recovery methodology of treatment for addictive behavior problems through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy.  This continuing education event will consist of two training modules that build on each other and explore the dimensions of working with clients and families in recovery.

AM Session:

Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART Recovery):

SMART Recovery is a non-profit cognitive behavioral self-help strategy for addictive behavioral problems.  Courts have made it clear that clients are entitled to treatment alternatives other than mandatory participation in Alcoholics Anonymous.  Providing information about this alternative is congruent with the social work principle of client self-determination.  This introduction to S.M.A.R.T. provides mental health professionals with all degrees of experience and involvement with addictions background information and practical stategies for immediate use with clients.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Gain familiarity with the theoretical basis of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with special attention to Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy
  • Become acquainted with the philosophy, structure, and strategies or S.M.A.R.T. Recovery
  • Practice S.M.A.R.T. strategies
  • Discuss implications for implementation

PM Session:

Ethical Challenges in Addiction Recovery

Social Workers face ethical challenges in relation to clients recovering from behavioral issues including drugs, alcohol, overeating, gambling and sexual behaiors, in relation to clients' families and friends, and in relation to other health care professionals, as well as in their own personal lives.  This interactive continuing education program prompts consideration of these challenges in light of the ethical standards promulgated by the Annotated Code of Maryland and the National Association of Social Workers.  As such it is appropriate for any social worker in Maryland. **This portion will satisfy 3 hours Cat. I CEU credits for Ethics.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • Review ethical standards for the provision of services
  • Consider implications of ethical requirements, communication, relationships and legally mandated reporting
  • Discuss ethical standards in relation to professional competence and research
  • Review potential sanctions for ethical standards transgressions.
