Inside Art Got into Me: The Work of Engels the Artist
Following the Fall 2019 Opening Reception, Neuberger Museum of Art members and special guests are invited to join Engels the Artist and curator Patrice Giasson for a guided tour of “Art Got into Me”, a 10-year survey of the artist’s work. After the tour, enjoy a champagne toast celebrating the exhibition and Engels’ Fall 2019 artist-in-residency at the Neuberger Museum.
Free for members and special guests.
Members at the Contributor Level and above will receive a complimentary, limited edition exhibition catalogue, personally signed by the artist. Additional catalogues will be available for sale for other interested attendees.

I did not get into art. Art got into me. For me, art is a natural process. I can create with anything… A work does not have to be one thing or another. A painting can have elements of photography or sculpture, blurring the conventions between disciplines… I believe in the spirit: sometimes I enter the work; we become one. I create as if from nothing, always listening to my senses. The strict economy of line and texture, the use of everyday objects and makeshift elegance recall my grandmother’s home in Port-au-Prince, which, against all odds, had splendor. The process speaks to the poetry of my childhood, the survival strategies that Haitians use to get from one day to the next.
