Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration

Starting in 2016 the Spiral Foundation's 'Sensory Integration Essentials' series will be expanding and rebranded as the Program for Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration. In addition to the sensory integration theory, clinical assessment and intervention courses that form the core of our program, we are adding a NEW 3-day course, Essentials of Administration of Sensory Integration Assessments (including the SIPT and Ayres clinical observations), and a NEW 2-day course, Essentials of Interpretation of Patterns of Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Participants who complete all five courses will receive a certificate of completion for the program.

As the WPS/USC SI certification program is being discontinued, we believe our new program will provide clinicians with a solid foundation of skills to understand, evaluate and treat sensory integration difficulties. This program includes courses on sensory integration theory, clinical assessment, test administration, interpretation of patterns of sensory integration dysfunction and sensory integration intervention. Courses 1, 2 and 5 will also be available in an on-line format, but courses 3 and 4 must be attended in person.  Participants of both live and on-line formats will complete competency tests after each course segment to reinforce and assure learning of material.

Essentials of Interpretation of Patterns of Sensory Integration Dysfunction

This course is Part Four of the five part Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration. Learn more about the program HERE.

This course will discuss patterns of sensory integration dysfunction as described by A. Jean Ayres as a result of factor and cluster analyses using the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests. Participants will learn how to identify patterns of sensory integration dysfunction through standardized and non-standardized assessment findings using the SIPT as well as other motor assessments which will be applicable to a wide range of client ages and practice settings. The course format, a combination of lecture, videotapes, case studies and small group discussion allows opportunities to address participants' questions and concerns.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Describe patterns of sensory integration dysfunction identified through SIPT cluster and factor analyses.
  2. Interpret assessment data (both observations and standardized test results) using sensory integration theory and SIPT cluster and factor analysis information to identify patterns of sensory integration dysfunction.
  3. Describe the statistical strengths and weaknesses of the SIPT.
  4. Apply knowledge of sensory integration theory and patterns of sensory integration dysfunction to report assessment results and identify a plan of care.

 

About the Speaker: Teresa A. May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA is the Executive Director of the Spiral Foundation as well as a practicing occupational therapist at OTA The Koomar Center. She is active in conducting research related to sensory integration through the Spiral Foundation’s Sensory Processing Research Center and Laboratory. She is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration theory and intervention, has authored book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration, and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis. Dr. May-Benson received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and her master’s degree from Boston University with a concentration in sensory integration and school system therapy. She was a Maternal and Child Health Fellow in the Doctoral Program in Therapeutic Studies at Boston University. She has received the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTA for her work in ideational praxis.

Prerequisites: This course is limited to occupational and physical therapy participants who have completed Courses 3 of this series, or who have completed Course 2 of the WPS/USC SIPT courses. All participants must bring with them their own SIPT test manual which will be used for the course. Bring highlighters and be prepared to highlight portions of the manual. All participants must bring with them a scored SIPT protocol report and clinical observations on one client.
