Working with Men for Mental Health Professionals: Counseling and Therapy

This three hour presentation will focus on skills and ideas for helping male clients. Theories, interventions, skills, and suggestions for specific male related therapy issues will be discussed. Evidenced base practices will be used for working with male clients. While most of the material will focus on adult male clients, some information on adolescent and younger males will also be addressed. The major goal of this workshop will be to help mental health professionals improve their skills with the male client populations. Developmental, gender, cultural, and environmental factors will be highlighted. How to engage with what we call "the highly resisted" male will be a focus as well. Teaching methods will include didactic group discussions, case vignettes, and audience engagement. The time is 9:00 am to 12:15 pm including one fifteen minute break.

The Objectives Include:

  1. Participants will learn suggestions on how to connect with adult male clients from various backgrounds.
  2. Participant will learn varied theoretical models for working with men.
  3. Participants will learn how to work with men in groups and individual therapy.
  4. Participants will learn how to understand how men view change and making changes.
  5. Participants will learn how to work with men in couple and family therapy.
