CGA September 2019 Event

Colorado’s New Psychiatric Advance Directive & Mental Health Legislative Update

Colorado saw a very busy legislative session in 2019 for multiple areas of law. As an attorney who takes court appointments and private litigation for involuntary mental health, guardianships, and conservatorships, Jonathan Culwell recognized a significant number of bills that affect persons with mental health disorders directly, indirectly, or are important tools for advocacy.

Jonathan compiled summaries of such bills and created a legislative update for an area he is calling Mental Health Law. Hopefully the selection of bills for this update will assist you in understanding the new laws that affect persons with a mental health disorder.

About the Speaker:

Jonathan Culwell is an attorney practicing at the law firm of Glatstein & O'Brien, LLP.  He focuses on probate matters in guardianship and conservatorship, estate, administration, and drafts estate plans for individuals and families.  He takes strong professional interest in Mental Health Law and mental health issues in protective proceedings.  Prior to joining Glatstein & O'Brien, Jonathan built his practice through an independent law office where he found that his advocacy of families and persons whose lives intersect with mental illness is a meaningful and necessary endeavor, including at an appellate level.  Jonathan earned his juris doctor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and his dual bachelor's degree in Creative Writing and Communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
