Parenting Across Racial and Cultural Lines: What You Need to Know

Families who foster or adopt transracially or transculturally are confronted with a unique set of issues and concerns that require careful thought, preparation and ongoing education.  Some of the issues that might arise include: selecting a school that embraces differences, educating extended family members, responding to intrusive questions, and preparing your child to confront racism.

This training is designed to educate prospective and current foster and adoptive parents about the important issues involved in transracial and transcultural adoption.

Objectives

  • To understand the complexity of parenting children of other races and cultures.
  • To create a safe environment so that you are your child's safe haven when s/he experiences the challenges of racism.
  • To identify strategies for having healthy conversations about race and culture in your family and community.
  • Identifying and leaning into your triggers around race conversations.
  • Identifying community and textual resources for transracial families.
