Women’s Political Empowerment A Century After the 19th Amendment: Reflections by Women Mayors 

One hundred years ago, Congress launched the process that was completed in 1920 with the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, stating the right to vote could not be denied or abridged on the basis of sex. One hundred years have passed, and we still have not achieved gender equality in politics. For example, only 21% of the mayors of cities with a population over 30,000 people are women. How much has really changed since then? What experiences are women in political leadership having today?

 Join the Initiative on Cities to welcome three Massachusetts women mayors who will reflect on these questions in light of their experiences as candidates and political leaders. Our panelists are Mayors Ruthanne Fuller of Newton, Donna Holaday of Newburyport and Yvonne Spicer of Framingham. Moderated by Virginia Sapiro, Professor of Political Science and Dean Emerita of Arts & Sciences.
