Anxiety and Trauma in Autism Part 2: Full Day Conference

Although it is widely recognized that anxiety is a concern for children and adults on the autism spectrum, parents and professionals feel largely ill-equipped to effectively handle the issues that arise. Children, youth, and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may express anxiety very differently from neurotypical people. Additionally, research has shown that people with autism have a higher risk of adverse and potentially traumatic childhood experiences. This conference will provide hands on activities to address these issues. Specifically, the following will be covered:

  • Review of tools to assess anxiety including assessments which address the entire spectrum regardless of level of impairment
  • How to filter behaviors related to trauma, those relating to ASD, and how they might overlap
  • How to use technology to identify sources of anxiety
  • The importance of taking a thorough learning history and how to apply this information to treatment
  • Implementation of the SCARF Model as an intervention strategy in multiple settings.

In addition to the above, we will be conducting mock assessments using tools discussed in the conference. This is an advanced session and all participants will have to have either participated in part one or have a solid understanding of anxiety in autism including causes and identification in individuals with ASD. 6 BACB Type 2 credits will be available as well as Department of Education CEUs.
