The Lumen at Playhouse Square

A special mid-construction hard-hat tour of the 34 story Lumen residential tower at Playhouse Square of Cleveland. The Lumen is billed as the tallest tower in the Cleveland Skyline in 40 years and we have a striking contrast as a modern glass skyscraper in the historic brick and stone buildingsof the Playhouse Square district.  Once completed, the tower will have 318 apartment units, 528 parking spaces, and 22,000 sf of residential amenity uses.  Constructed of post-tensioned concrete and skinned in window wall, the Lumen is a tightly-constrained, high-density development that is more akin to buildings in Chicago or New York.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be shown a presentation of how the Construction manager is handleing the challenging site logistics of constructing a new building with full-coverage of the 1 acre parcel tight to two street edges, a near alley and up against a historic 16 -story building.
  • Attendees will explore the under construction Lumen by traversing the subgrade levels and first dozen or so floors of 34 floor tower framed in concrete while learning about the design and impact on the Playhouse Square neighborhood.
  • Attendees will examine the construction technique of framing the concrete floors with all of the embedded systems within and the lessons learned as applies in architectural design.
  • Attendees will discuss after reviewing partial installations the benefits of Windows Wall systems for this type of construction over a more conventional approach to using Storefront or Curtain-wall.

COST: AIA Members, AIA Cleveland Affiliate Members, NOMA and Students $10, Non members $20

Will meet at the AIA Cleveland office, and walk over to The Lumen at 5:45 pm.

Registration is required and spots are limited, so sign-up today!

Attendees must bring their own hard hats and protective eye wear.

There will be a happy hour immediately following the tour TBD.
