A Problem-Based Learning Approach to Understanding Childhood Trauma

Participants will learn about the impact of childhood trauma through a dynamic, interactive problem-based learning approach that will include group discussions led by the instructors. The Core Curriculum on Childhood Trauma was developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (www.nctsn.org) and helps providers conceptualize the children they care for in a complex, trauma informed manner. The presentation will include case-based discussions to facilitate interactive learning.

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to list the core principles of childhood trauma developed by the NCTSN Core Curriculum Task Force and apply them to special education cases
  • Participants will be able to apply problem-based learning of the core principles of childhood trauma to case vignettes by using clinical reasoning to process client information, formulating evidence based assessments and culturally sensitive interventions for children and families, and devising self-care interventions for the treating clinicians
  • Discuss in group settings the implications of trauma-informed education and trauma treatment
