LGBT Aging 101

What You Need to Know about Serving Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Older Adults

Many LGBT seniors do not feel safe around, or understood by, the very people they depend on for care—a reality that is being increasingly addressed through legislation and education. Meanwhile, mainstream service providers have limited knowledge of the psycho-social, cultural, and economic issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults and caregivers.

This presentation introduces participants to the unique issues facing this under-served population and provides models for programmatic initiatives, as well as practice skills for enhancing professional capacity to effectively serve LGBT older adults and caregivers. While anyone can attend, the program is designed for aging service providers, social workers, and healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify unique care concerns and aging challenges facing LGBT older adults and caregivers
  • Explore innovative approaches to creating welcoming environments and programming for LGBT older adults and caregivers
  • Learn how to bring these efforts into individual and organizational practice

CE Credits for Social Work and Nursing: This program has been approved for 1.5 Social Work Continuing Education hours for relicensure, in accordance with 258 CMR. NASW-MA Chapter CE Approval Program Authorization Number D81157. This program also meets the requirements of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing at 244 CMR 5.00 for 1.5 contact hours.
