Explore this 500-year old printmaking process using contemporary techniques! The class focuses on creating intaglio prints from copper plates and will explore basic image-making techniques including: dry point, line etching, Chine colle’, plate preparation, and edition printing. Artists will learn in-depth processes in etching—leaving with a fully-processed plate, a suite of prints and all the knowledge to continue etching in their home studios. All levels welcome. No experience necessary.

Techniques:

• Copper plate preparation, paper selection and all printing techniques will be demonstrated and explored in this hands-on workshop.
• Proof printing, edition printing (including the introduction of Chine colle) will be mastered.
• Artists will explore hard (and, depending on time, soft) ground platemaking to explore creating line art and textural images in their plates.
• In the second session, artists will continue to fine-tune their plates, re-process their images and print a small edition or suite of their prints.

Students will need to bring the following:

 
-Sketchbook or notebook

-8x10” (or approximate) newsprint pad for transporting plate and prints

-One roll of paper towels
