Walking the Mystical Path with Practical Feet
I have been blessed with two mentors this lifetime who taught me about living and practically integrating my soul path and purpose and reconnecting with what has heart and meaning – Aminah Raheem and Angeles Arrien. Both helped me combine my internal and external worlds; personal and professional lives; body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Their presence and teachings increased my self-awareness, self-compassion, and understanding of healing, authenticity and wholeness.
Angeles studied cultures all over the world. After discovering common beliefs, practices, and ideas, which fostered wholeness and well-being, she created her Four Fold Wayİ Programs that I attended many times. Living the “four fold way” involved incorporating four practices: (1) Show up and be present; (2) Pay attention to what has heart and meaning; (3) Tell the truth without blame or judgment; and (4) Be open not attached to outcome. These practices continue to help me meet challenges, take responsibility for living my best life, enhance communication, and discover patterns that hold me back from or promote fulfillment and peace.
Angeles spoke about addictions we struggle with today because of two universal fears – abandonment and entrapment. Her words changed my life…the addiction to perfection; the addiction to intensity and drama; the addiction to knowing and having everything figured out; and the addiction to what is NOT working. Being mindful, compassionate, and forgiving with myself regarding these has enhanced my teaching preparation, creativity, and overall presence before, during, and after workshops I teach or attend.
Angeles also taught her version of our Awareness Journal. She called it “tracking,” and suggested several things to track in daily life to raise self-awareness regarding what might need change and/or strengthening. One thing she suggested was Tracking the Four Riversİ:
It will be insightful to track the four rivers in your own lives looking back over 2019. I look forward to hearing about and sharing our discoveries during the next SLI Faculty Webinar on November 21st at 7:00 PM est.
