Program Description:
Financial planning is often an emotional process for clients.  Emotions around money can be strong and conflicting. While many people see wealth as a path to freedom and security, money also comes with unanticipated emotional burdens. When left unaddressed, this can lead to difficult family dynamics and internal blocks within clients that cause them to make decisions that are out of alignment with their own values and plans. Come join our panelists in an interactive session about common emotional struggles around money, some tools for assessing when emotions are getting in the way and what to do when this situation arises.

Panel:
Renee Spencer, MFT, Private Practice
Renée Spencer is a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 20 years of experience working in mental health. She specializes in helping people with the unanticipated emotional challenges of wealth and success.  She has offices in Marin and San Francisco.

Marlis Jansen, FBS, Founder, The Money Conversation
Marlis Jansen founded The Money Conversation with a desire to help people increase their emotional awareness and agility with respect to their finances. Early in her career, while working in the health care information technology business, Marlis observed that having more information did not correlate to more effective decision making. People needed to feel safe. They needed to feel heard.  Finances are no different. We have an emotional context for every financial decision we make whether or not we are aware of it.  Marlis saw an opportunity to address a need that is rarely addressed in traditional financial planning.  Marlis’ background as a therapist, running a private philanthropic foundation and as a member of a multigenerational family gave her valuable insight into how people relate to money. This spans the gamut from multigenerational family dynamics to portfolio management.

Joan DiFuria, Co-Founder, Money, Meaning & Choice Institute
Joan is a recognized speaker on topics such as psychological opportunities and pitfalls of wealth, “Sudden Wealth Syndrome”, and children & money. She co-wrote the book “Affluence Intelligence” and is a licensed marriage, family and child counselor.

Moderator:
Joseph Kuo, Founder, Abundance Wealth Planning, Co-Chair, FPASF Programs Committee
