January Joint CSI & AIA Meeting

CSI. Crime Scene Investigators. Splashy graphics, cutting edge computer enhancements, mass spectrometers. So what does this have to with the built environment and the REAL CSI?

Our presenter Greg Marks, the Forensic Engineering Department Head at Barry Isett & Associates will share his years of experience and provide insight into how failures happen.

Structural Failures and Water Infiltration: Investigating the Built Environment

Forensic Engineering in the construction industry encompasses the investigation of buildings and infrastructure that fail or do not function as intended. Old and new construction alike offer plenty of deficiencies – the former due to age and Mother Nature, the latter due to problems with design and quality control. This presentation will focus on two of the most common types of building failures – structural and water infiltration. Case studies will be reviewed by walking through the investigative process on several failures from causation to remediation. Additionally, the role of the Expert Investigator in litigations will be explored with an emphasis on how this specialized work differs from ‘engineering design’.
