The Iron Hill Trail is a graveled trail. This scenic trail is a loop that winds along the banks of Lake Allatoona through a historic area that was once home to an active iron mining community in the mid 1800s. The mountain was named Red Top because the soil has a deep red color that is caused by high iron ore content.
As always, wear comfortable (not new) sturdy shoes and layered clothing. Pack at least 2 bottles of water, snacks and your lunch. We may opt to stop about midway on the trail for lunch, with group consensus. Please, bring a friendly smile, great attitude and an open mind. Get a good restful night's sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast to help sustain your energy.
We caravan and volunteer carpool. If it is out of your way to meet us at the Target parking lot, feel free to meet us at the trailhead between 10:00a.m. -10:15a. However, please have my number (678.231.4973) with you so we can coordinate. If you are a passenger in the carpool, be prepared to donate $5 - $7 cash to your driver for gas and parking. It is less than an hour drive from Atlanta. There is a $5 fee for parking. If you do not have an annual pass, you can go to your local library and check-out a State Park Parking Pass for free.
We practice the
Leave No Trace principles... what you carry in, you carry out, with the exception of your picturesque memories of the trail and of course, any photos you may take and new friends you may make.
Please feel free to contact me by return email or telephone at 678.231.4973, should you have any questions or concerns.
