Legal, Accounting, and Insurance Basics for Business
(Aiken SC, Friday morning February 14)

When you open your doors, have you covered the bases legally? Do you have the necessary registrations, licenses, and permits? Do you need contracts with your employees and/or customers? What are your legal responsibilities to your employees and/or contractors? All of these issues should be planned for and addressed before they become problems and impact your ability to succeed in business. Kevin Pethick, Partner at Austin & Pethick Law Firm, PC, will answer your legal questions about:

  • Business structure and asset protection
  • Partnership agreements
  • Non-disclosure and non-compete agreements
  • Real estate decisions
  • Employment matters
  • Workers Comp
  • Corporate compliance
  • Licensing
  • Business estate planning

Starting a business is exciting, but also overwhelming.  It is tempting to concentrate on what makes money for the business and let necessary business structure and accounting decisions slide until it is too late.  Joel Stewart, Partner at Serotta Maddocks and Evans, CPAs, will help prepare you for business ownership.  You don’t have to be an accountant to do a great job of record keeping, but you do need to understand some basic principles and terms. In this workshop, Joel will:

  • Provide an overview of basic business tax structures and their similarities and differences
  • Discuss accounting systems and their implementation
  • Cover many of the different tax reporting and licensing agencies
  • Offer advice on employees and subcontractors
  • Walk through basic financial statements
  • Talk about common business deductions
Business insurance exists to protect your investment in your business. It can also help provide financial compensation to the people who work for you if accidents occur. Most commercial insurance coverages are optional; some, like workers compensation, are mandatory in most states.John McMichael, Managing Agent for Anderson Insurance Associates, will provide a basic insurance overview of the types of insurance policies that you should know about and consider purchasing. Every business has different needs. Some of these coverages may not be applicable to the type of company you own and run:
  • General Liability Insurance
  • Property Insurance
  • Workers Compensation Insurance
  • Commercial Auto Insurance
  • Commercial Umbrella Insurance
  • Management and Professional Liability Insurance
  • Business Income Insurance
