Ethical Dilemma, Advocacy, Barriers to Communication and Strategic Mediation

Our profession evolves and, as interpreters committed to excellent service, we need to evolve with it. Experience is not enough to improve. Challenges not properly handled during an interpreting session could threaten to derail the session. This full day session focuses on how to use the knowledge of code of ethics and standards of practice to address ethical dilemma, how to use strategic mediation to overcome the famous 4 barriers to communications, how to understand and use advocacy only when strictly necessary and everything and anything in between. 

These particular topics are an enhancement of the 6th edition of The Community Interpreter training. If you attended the 5th edition or need a refresh to feel more confident for your certification test, you do not want to miss this very interactive session. 

The ability to choose the right course of action will also enable you to correctly answer questions for the Medical Certification written exam. Join us to work together on  a number of activities, and practice the different strategies with realistic scenarios taken from medical settings.

About the Trainer

Giovanna was born and raised in Naples, Italy. She graduated from the Istituto Orientale, Naples, Italy in Foreign Modern Languages and Literatures in 1992, and from the School of Translation and Interpretation, Geneva, Switzerland in 1997. She has worked in the United States as an Italian translator, interpreter, language tester and Senior Project Manager in translation. In 2010 she founded Cesco Linguistic Services (CLS) in Colorado.  A co-author of The Community Interpreter®: An International Textbook and its workbook as well as The Medical Interpreter, Giovanna served on the Board of the Colorado Association of Professional Interpreters (CAPI) from 2009 through 2013, including three years as Co-Chair. She speaks at conferences across the U.S. and abroad and is currently Chef of the U.S. national delegation for ISO -  International Standards for Interpreting. Giovanna is proud mother of two sons as well as three daughters from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
