Advanced Death and Cold Case Investigation Course (Andover, MA)

This 3-day course is designed for investigators that have previous “hands-on” experience in death investigations or those that have previously completed Basic Death Investigation training. This class will provide the attendee with the training they need to properly conduct advanced death investigations, well beyond what they may have learned in an introductory death investigation course. It will also provide the training needed to investigate and conduct Cold Case investigations.

Target Audience:  Investigators: Preferably those with death investigation experience and Investigative Supervisors 

Based on the information presented in this course of instruction the student will be able to:

  • Understand the priorities involved in the preliminary investigation of death scenes
  • Understand the common mistakes made by officers and supervisors during the conduct of a preliminary investigation of death scenes
  • Understand the processes for transition from preliminary investigation to crime scene management at a death scene
  • Know the goals of the preliminary investigation as well as the personnel involved and their responsibilities 
  • Understand the common mistakes made as investigations transition from preliminary investigation to the crime scene management phase
  • Know the goals of effective crime scene management and the responsibilities of the investigators and supervisors responsible for the management of death related crime scenes
  • Understand the common mistakes made during the management of death scenes
  • Be able to recognize the tasks necessary to successfully complete investigative follow up once a case transitions from crime scene management to the follow up phase
  • Understand the different nuances of commonly seen death scenes versus unique death scenes
  • Know the tasks that need to be accomplished to successfully identify a suspect in homicide scenes and how to handle suspects once they are in custody
  • Know and understand the functions and importance of court preparation
  • Understand the basics of serial killers and analyze their M.O’s
  • Understand and recognize crime scene staging 
  • Understand the differences between Genetic Genealogy and Familial DNA testing practices

 Instructor: Det. Jonathan Smith is currently assigned to the Norfolk, VA Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide Unit and serves as the only sworn member of the unit. Jon has spent most of his career working in the Violent Crime Unit where, he has worked hundreds of death investigations, including homicides, suspicious, accidental, and natural deaths. He has also worked several capital murder cases. Jon has experience handling many high-profile cases, including a homicide case that led him to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, to apprehend two murder suspects after the case was featured on the television show, America’s Most Wanted. He is a native of North Carolina and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy. He joined the growing list of professional instructors for SRR Training in 2019.
