Practical Aspects of Prescribing Aerobic and Resistance Training Following Stroke

This workshop is intended for physiotherapists and kinesiologists who design exercise programs for people following stroke.  The information will be valuable for those members of the allied health team who support the implementation of cardiovascular and resistance exercise programs for stroke survivors.

This program will equip physiotherapists and kinesiologists with the pragmatic knowledge, skills and tools necessary to design, deliver and monitor exercise programs for stroke survivors to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle and metabolic health.  

Who Should Attend?

Physiotherapists and Kinesiologists who work with people who have had a stroke. 

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance from the CESN.

Speakers   Dr. Susan Marzolini is an Exercise Physiologist and Registered Kinesiologist. She designed and developed Toronto Rehab/University Health Network’s Exercise and Risk Factor Modification Program for People following Stroke (TRI-REPS). Susan’s professional objective is to advocate for increasing the opportunity for people to access structured physical activity and risk factor modification programs following stroke. Her research interests are to examine the dose-response relationship between exercise and health related outcomes in people with stroke and cardiac disease. Using novel exercise training methods and combinations of exercise strategies her aim is to determine an exercise treatment aimed at promoting long-term health, repairing the brain and restoring lost mobility after stroke. Susan is a World Heart Federation (WHF) Emerging Leader for non-communicable disease prevention (2018). The goal of the WHF is to reduce premature mortality from stroke and other cardiovascular diseases globally by at least 25% by 2025. She has over 60 publications published in journals such as Stroke, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Circulation CV Q&O, and Neurorehabilitation Neural Repair.

Danielle Lawrence is a Registered Kinesiologist and is currently completing a Master in Public Health in Family and Community Medicine, with a focus in global health and health policy, at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Working at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute/University Health Network for over 9 years, Danielle has assumed the role as Program Coordinator for the Lyndhurst Spinal Cord Injury Fitness Centre Program, and currently at the Rumsey Cardiovascular and Secondary Prevention Program as a Cardiac Rehabilitation Supervisor with TRI-REPS (Toronto Rehab Institute Risk Factor Modification Program for People Following Stroke) and the general cardiovascular rehabilitation streams. Danielle also assumes of role of Clinical Practice Coordinator for the Chronic Disease and Mental Health Program at the University of Toronto Master of Professional Kinesiology Program. Danielle’s professional interests include promoting and increasing health equity in the primary care setting, through patient advocacy, public health policy, program development and quality improvemen
